    Supplementation programs are very much a part of our cow-calf program. The type of supplementation may vary throughout the year as well as from year to year. A good manager knows the type of supplement that his herd needs. Supplements are available in many forms from commercial distributors and can consist of many types of feeds, minerals and vitamins. Many producers choose to develop their own supplements utilizing feeds produced on their ranch or that can be purchased locally. A supplementation program may be defined as a program which provides the difference between the nutrients required by livestock and the nutrients available in their major food supply. For a producer to evaluate the needs of his herd, he must know the nutrient requirements for his cattle and the nutrient availability in the feed supply

    We envision an Ambient Intelligent Environment as an environment with technology embedded within the framework of that environment to help enhance an users experience in that environment. Existing implementations , while working effectively, are themselves an expensive and time consuming investment. Applying the same expertise to an environment on a monolithic scale is very inefficient, and thus, will require a different approach. In this paper, we present this problem, propose theoretical solutions that would solve this problem, with the guise of experimentally verifying and comparing these approaches, as well as a formal method to model the entire scenario

    This study examined the route of infection by free-swimming larvae of 2 monocotylid monogeneans that inhabit the gills (Neoheterocotyle rhinobatidis) and the nasal tissue (Merizocotyle icopae) of the shovelnose ray, Rhinobatos typus, from Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Larvae of N. rhinobatidis and M. icopae attached directly to the gills and the nasal tissue of the ray, respectively, and did not first settle on the skin. Initial development of the post-oncomiracidium of N. rhinobatidis was rapid and hamuli formed between 6 and 24 h p.i. at a mean temperature of 26 Β°C. However, growth then slowed markedly and was variable; only 2 fully mature individuals were found 20 days p.i. at a mean temperature of 24Β·5 Β°C. Development of M. icopae was slow and variable throughout; hamuli did not appear until 10 days p.i. and no mature individuals were obtained even 22 days p.i. at a mean temperature of 24Β·5 Β°C. No character could be found as an indicator of parasite age for N. rhinobatidis or M. icopae due to the high variability in development in both species.L. A. Chisholm and I. D. Whittingto

    A unified approach to linking experimental, statistical and computational analysis of spike train data

    A fundamental issue in neuroscience is how to identify the multiple biophysical mechanisms through which neurons generate observed patterns of spiking activity. In previous work, we proposed a method for linking observed patterns of spiking activity to specific biophysical mechanisms based on a state space modeling framework and a sequential Monte Carlo, or particle filter, estimation algorithm. We have shown, in simulation, that this approach is able to identify a space of simple biophysical models that were consistent with observed spiking data (and included the model that generated the data), but have yet to demonstrate the application of the method to identify realistic currents from real spike train data. Here, we apply the particle filter to spiking data recorded from rat layer V cortical neurons, and correctly identify the dynamics of an slow, intrinsic current. The underlying intrinsic current is successfully identified in four distinct neurons, even though the cells exhibit two distinct classes of spiking activity: regular spiking and bursting. This approach – linking statistical, computational, and experimental neuroscience – provides an effective technique to constrain detailed biophysical models to specific mechanisms consistent with observed spike train data.Published versio

    The value of preventing malaria in Tembien, Ethiopia

    The authors measure the monetary value households place on preventing malaria in Tembien, Tigray Region, Ethiopia. They estimate a household demand function for a hypothetical malaria vaccine and compute the value of preventing malaria as the household's maximum willingness to pay to provide vaccines for all family members. They contrast willingness to pay with the traditional costs of illness (medical costs and time lost because of malaria). Their results indicate that the value of preventing malaria with vaccines is about US36ahouseholdayear,orabout15percentofimputedannualhouseholdincome.Thisis,onaverage,abouttwoorthreetimestheexpectedhouseholdcostofillness.Despitethegreatbenefitsfrompreventingmalaria,thefactthatvaccinedemandispriceinelasticsuggeststhatitwillbedifficulttoachievesignificantmarketpenetrationunlessthevaccineissubsidized.Theauthorsobtainsimilarresultsforinsecticideβˆ’treatedbednets.Theirestimatesofhouseholddemandfunctionsforbednetssuggestthatatapricethatmightpermitcostrecovery(US36 a household a year, or about 15 percent of imputed annual household income. This is, on average, about two or three times the expected household cost of illness. Despite the great benefits from preventing malaria, the fact that vaccine demand is price inelastic suggests that it will be difficult to achieve significant market penetration unless the vaccine is subsidized. The authors obtain similar results for insecticide-treated bed nets.
